ABBA's greatest-hits collection Gold is one of the biggest-selling albums of all time because ... well ... it's pure gold.
ABBA's catalogue is pretty flawless from top to bottom -- at least if one politely ignores 2021's unnecessary reunion LP Voyage, anyway -- so the argument could be raised that pretty much everything ABBA ever committed to tape is gold.
If you've gotta condense all that gold into one double-LP package, however, the 1992 compilation Gold: Greatest Hits does a fine job of expressing the pop-tastic majesty of the Swedish quartet in a relatively concise 19 tracks. You know all of these tunes, from "Dancing Queen" to "Super Trouper" to "Voulez-Vous" to "Waterloo" to the magnificent "The Winner Takes It All," but the fact that you're not the least bit sick of them after all this time says it all, doesn't it? This stuff is ageless, which would explain why 45 years on from ABBA's original exit Gold still sells by the bucketload. With more than 30 million copies in circulation worldwide, in fact, this collection stands as one of the best-selling albums of all time, right up there with Rumours and Thriller. It's just ... gold.
